You Need HeroForge

HeroForge has amazing tools for creating custom figures for tabletop gaming.  Basically, you can build your own 1" figure for your D&D games... ...or Savage Rifts ... ...or, fuck it, just lose your damn mind and have fun... These screenshots were chosen to show off some of the tool features available in HeroForge "Cat Angel" there was created by a 7-year-old girl, who was just having fun one day playing around with her dad's account.  That's how easy and fun the interface is. And different potential - like D&D , or Rifts, or Supers (I got introduced to Mighty Protectors , which is multi-genre a toolkit game like GURPS   or Hero System ). All of these were created by a friend of mine. He's been using HeroForge for years, and backed a few of the KickStarters , so has free access to some of the advanced tools.  (He was showing me the tools, so I asked if I could grab some screenshots for my blog.) Note, that my friend hasn't actually bought  any o...

Technical Manuals for All Things Space

Oh, I had such a hard time picking which sample images from Haynes to showcase the "Are you serious?!" collection of space  books they put together . These are hardcover books.  They have some real world ones, like a lot of the NASA space program craft, but as you can see, they also turned their engineers and writers loose on fictional space craft - like the frickin' Death Star! ( source ) I am so putting all of these on my Christmas wishlist, and going to carve out some space on my bookcase for them. ( source ) ( source ) "That's no moon. It's a space station." Like Setting A Planet on Fire

It's like watching Galactus  eat a planet.  Source article here . Except it's just one of those things that, apparently, started out as an "experiment to see how many matches it would take to make a perfect sphere." And there you go. Oh, and here's a picture of Galactus, the World Eater. ( image source )

Superheros on Live Stage - Soon I Will Be Invincible

"Soon I Will Be Invincible" - hadn't heard of it until Heinz Kreienbaum   mentioned it one day .  Apparently, it started life as a novel .  I so need to get a copy and read it. Christina Hall as Fatale And then someone did a live stage production of it .  That's pretty cool. I hope it smashed box office records, and all that.

Snow Crash - fucking awesome book

On my mind? The cybernetic rat/dog thing from "Snow Crash" - they had built-in fusion reactors that let them run at hundreds of miles per hour, but needed massive cooling fins to avoid overheating. "Badass: Between Hiro, Raven, Y.T., Uncle Enzo, and the cybernetic rat/dog thing, the book has more badassness than most books should be allowed to have." http://allthetropes.wikia.com/wiki/Snow_Crash

Big Bertha is Coming! Temporary closing Seattle Alaskan Way viaduct

If you've never driven on Seattle Alaska Way Viaduct, it's pretty cool. It's like a bridge over the city. On one side is the city, sprawling metropolis that it is, and on the other side is the waterfront and the ocean. There's even parts where the bridges are stacked on top of each other - Southbound traffic on one level, Northbound traffic on the other level. Unfortunately, it's also really, really old. It's been this major source of political in-fighting for years, since it has needed major repairs and overhauls. Oh, and they're building a tunnel beneath it. If you haven't heard about Big Bertha , it's pretty cool, too - it's like this tunneling machine straight out of science fiction ;-)  Anyway, Bertha is digging under the Alaskan Way viaduct this week, so they're shutting it down.  Yeah.  Good luck commuters!  Good luck tourists! Transportation Coordinators: Please forward to your employees as appropriate. Star...

Radiant Tank Top Heaters

I had a Mozart "for concentration and study" vid running in the background on YouTube, when an advert for Radiant Tank Top Heaters by Global Industrial came on. Definitely not the kind of thing I normally expect, but I got curious, and once I saw the images of "propane tanks with laser dishes" my mind went running all over the place.  These things seem really dangerous, but also very practical.  I can see every dude-bro's garage workshop with at least one of these, and if I was out in that shop on a freezing-ass cold  day, I'd be parked next to this thing, because I'm tough, but still smart enough to stay warm. My first random thought was the Star Wars laser dish cannons .  I loved Empire Strikes Back , and always thought these things were cool in a totally impractical kind of way. I love that Lucas and his people always seemed to let their imaginations run wild. I mean, just because WE think it might be impractical doesn't mean some ot...
